The Department
The Trading and Market Strategies group was formed to respond to the growing demands from our clients, regulators, and counterparties for a coordinated strategy to address the rapid pace of change and increasing complexity of our market structure - all with a goal to positively impact retained alpha and risk in the investment process for the benefit of our clients.   We seek to create this impact by engaging and educating our internal and external stakeholders with action oriented ideas and requests that reflect our research, analysis, and writings.

Key areas of focus of this group include:

  • Investor and trader behavior and performance;
  • Counterparty risk, behavior, and performance;
  • Trading technology, infrastructure, and information security; and
  • Market structure, regulation, function, and liquidity.

The Position
Wellington Management Company is seeking to hire a Quantitative Trading Research Analyst.   Based in Boston, this position will report to the Manager of Trading Strategy Research within the Trading and Market Strategies group. The individual will work with various teams in the firm including investors, traders, legal & compliance and product/risk management to enhance implementation and execution of investment ideas. The responsibilities will cover all asset classes including but not limited to equity, fixed income, FX and derivatives. S/he will work closely with traders and investors to analyze behavior and/or processes and to identify efficiencies in the implementation of investment ideas.   The ideal candidate will have a strong analytical and numerical aptitude and be an innovative thinker. Candidates must possess a strong ability to understand complex processes and use data science to model and develop simple yet powerful solutions.  Strong communication and presentation skills and a high level of integrity are required.

The Quantitative Trading Research Analyst will work closely with colleagues from across the firm to carry-out first class research to enhance the implementation and execution of investment ideas. The ideal candidate will not only research the following topics, but s/he will be instrumental in developing new questions to be solved through data science to improve our investment processes on behalf of our clients.  

Specific areas of focus will include (but are not limited to):

         Modeling trading behavior of investors, traders and brokers/algorithms;

         Forecasting and measuring transaction costs;

         Analyzing liquidity within portfolios;

         Characterizing and forecasting trade-horizon alpha;

         Analyzing the remaining capacity of investment strategies;

         Measuring and evaluating portfolio trading data; and

         Investigating and questioning market micro-structures.

A successful candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a quantitative orientation, and be particularly detail oriented. S/he will have a minimum of five years of experience.

Specific qualifications for the position are the following:

  • Experience or natural interest in the capital markets, data science and behavioral analysis;
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with an emphasis on accuracy, concision, timeliness, and clarity;
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines and other pressures;
  • Strong analytical aptitude and capability to perform deep-dive data analysis as well as high-level strategic thinking;
  • Intermediate/advanced programming skills and knowledge of database querying languages; and
  • Strong academic credentials; a Master's degree in a quantitative field is required. Progress toward or completion of a PhD would be additive.
