Director Advanced Analytics C&CA is responsible to drive the identification and development of key opportunities within Scotiabank's International Retail and Small Business Lending Portfolios. Successful candidate will leverage leading-edge advanced analytics (e.g. AI/ Machine Learning, Big Data) and industry best practices to develop innovative data driven solutions and digital transformation to grow Scotiabank's international retail lending business, maximize profitability, and manage risk exposure within the Bank's credit risk appetite.

The role has direct responsibility of management over 20 Caribbean countries while sharing best practices with the local teams in 2 Central America countries. Broad strategic partnership with internal and external business partners including all Credit Life Cycle teams, Product Management, Modelling, Country Risk Management; and regular exposure to senior executive team through monthly meetings. Key success factors include abilities to translate data analytics into executable business solutions, excellent communication, and strategic influencings kills. The role requires strong team management experience of 8+ reporting members.

The role has direct leadership over 5 key areas of accountabilities below:
  • Advanced Analytics: Lead a team of 2-3 individuals (incl. Data Scientists, Data Engineers and a Project Manager) to deliver scalable business solutions using Advanced Analytics under AGILE rapid lab environment. The director engages external and internal partners to identify business problems, designs analytical solutions using Big Data analytics techniques, plans and manages resource and technological requirements, provides hands-on direction to team on analytical execution of rapid lab, oversees product delivery/ implementation, and tracking of results for feedback loop. The incumbent must be able to bridge business knowledge with technical know-hows to drive data-driven solution. This role is required to build strategic partnership with business partners across all areas of credit life cycles, products, technologies, internal analytical communities and external consultants. Successful candidate must possess the ability to think outside the box, ability to be resourceful and strong project management skill.
  • Portfolio Oversight and Management: Lead a team of 1-2 individuals to conduct a regular review and monitoring of retail and small business portfolio performance under the Bank's credit risk appetite (e.g. growth, new accounts, delinquency, and loan losses provision). Develop capabilities to identify opportunities within the portfolio, product, and customer segmentation level through the use of business intelligence tools and reporting to identify early warning signs of portfolio deterioration or growth, and communicate findings to relevant credit life cycle areas to formulate credit strategies. The Director meets with the senior executive team on a monthly basis to present recommendations. The Director must possess strong understanding of retail credit risk management across life cycle areas, credit strategies, and ability to drive and influence business decisions.
  • Portfolio Development Analytics: Lead a team of 2 individuals to provide project based analytics support to credit policy development initiatives. The team works closely with Credit Policy team to provide portfolio assessment and financial impact analysis on both retail and small business policy change proposals and large business cases. This team also provides ad-hoc analytical support on general portfolio inquiries and in-depth portfolio reviews. The Director must possess statistical background to be able to use data to quantify and analyze business impacts, and prioritize areas of opportunities and risks arose from the business proposal.   • Business Intelligence: Lead a team of 2 individuals to manage MIS functionality and business intelligence toolsets to process and deliver databases, standard and regulatory reporting, analytical tools such as tableau dashboard, data cube on a monthly basis. The team also provides data design/solutions to support new business requirements, integration of data across life-cycles to provide single view, and maintenance of data infrastructure to allow other team members to achieve their tasks.
  • Business Integration: Lead an individual to support the acquisition of new businesses. This mandate covers areas related to the integration of new business from defining credit risk appetite, credit policy recommendation, data and MIS infrastructure set up, portfolio monitoring and oversights, PCL management - with ultimate goals to manage and control risk including credit risk and other type of risks inherently to strategy designs, operational execution, and technology implementation. The director and team works alongside with Business Integration project team to deliver business integration under managed timeframe.

In addition, the role is responsible to lead a medium size team of 8+ individuals:

Education / Experience / Other Information
  • Degree in Business, Economics, Actuarial Science or related discipline
  • Over 10 years of experience in the retail and small business credit management or products management in financial institutions such as Banks, Credit Card Issuers, consulting firms
  • Demonstrated experience of managing a medium size team of over 10 individuals with broad array of responsibilities and focus
  • Sound knowledge of retail banking and/or risk management practices, with knowledge of the regulatory environment and financial services marketplace
  • Expertise in Advanced Analytics discipline including Big Data analytics, AI/ Machine Learning. Can manage a team of highly technical individuals to use data to drive business solutions
  • Strong relationship building and negotiation skills. The incumbent must be able to articulate their views internally to influence and gain supports at the executive level
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills: can convey messages in a clear, concise and succinct manner, select the best method of communication to influence business decisions
