CLOAS Software Developer

Applies the principles of software engineering to design, develop, maintain and test a given system always putting quality first and showing a high attention to detail. Strives to work independently while demonstrating initiative in the role.

Reporting to the Development Team Manager, the successful candidate will:

  • Research and design small features

  • Deliver quality and robust code in a timely manner

  • Provide Production Support activities including investigation and defect fixing

  • Develop an understanding the architecture of the core product and project

  • Work closely with PMO/BA for a better understanding of the features

  • Demonstrate ownership of tasks from beginning to end

  • Identify blockers to current tasks and flagging them to the team

  • Communicate clearly and regularly on progress of tasks to the team

  • Respect and collaborate with co-workers on a day to day basis

  • Understand and adhere to the development processes

  • Strive to understand the business domain

  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies, trends, tools, frameworks, languages, services

  • Actively participate in team ceremonies

The Person

The candidate will have experience and ability in COBOL development technologies, ideally in the Financial Services industry.

Specifically, we require quality-driven individuals with the following skills and qualities:

Core Technical and personal Skills:

  • Is proficient in the COBOL programming language

  • Has practical experience of at least one other OO/Procedural Programming, Automation Testing, SQL Scripting and SQL Server

  • Shows good understanding of the day-to-day tools such as, but not limited to, IDEs, SCMs, DBs

  • Ability to perform code reviews and provide constructive feedback, also to receive feedback and action

  • Has a high level of proficiency in one or more technical domains

  • Ability to refactor technical debt and to understand the scope of the refactoring

  • Shows a good understanding of agile values

  • Has good communication skills (verbal and written)

  • Shows effective time management

Desirable skills

  • Experience with MicroFocus Visual COBOL

  • Experience of Azure DevOPS / VSTS source control, GIT source control, GITFlow and other branching and merging schemes, automated deployment & continuous integration.

  • Microsoft SSIS, SSRS

  • Experience with Microsoft technologies C#, ASP.NET, MVC

  • Good knowledge of JIRA or similar

  • Experience of test-driven development, Behaviour Driven Development and agile methodology.
