Overview of the Department / Section:

Corporate Technology is responsible for the operation, development and support of all applications across all areas of the business. Corporate Technology ensures IT strategy; architecture and solutions are aligned to business requirements. Within Corporate Technology, the Infrastructure group manages the day to day running of the technologies which underpin the business systems and focused teams within this portfolio manage the day to day health, support and future direction of each specialist area. 

 

The responsibility of the Grid Computing team is to provide a stable performant High Performance Computing and Azure Batch platform for the Front Office Systems applications. This includes liaising with the server platform teams who support the underlying on-premise hardware, and the cloud engineering team who oversee the Azure platform.

In addition to the day to day responsibilities, a major focus for the year will be the upgrade of the HPC platform, exploring the use of other Grid computing solutions, the use of Linux nodes for workloads, and increasing automation to reduce the hands-on management.

 

Main Purpose of the Role:

  • The primary objective is to support and develop the High Performance Grid (HPC) and Azure Batch platforms, to ensure the Front Office Systems division has a stable and efficient platform for performing their required workloads.
  • This includes optimisation both in terms of performance and cost management of the on-premise and cloud-based platform.
  • A key requirement is to further develop and automate the platform using the latest technologies that are available both within the existing HPC software itself as well as the underlying servers and cloud services.
  • Identification and automation of manual processes, including refactoring existing scripts to comply with the coding standards defined by the MUFG Infrastructure Development Community of Practice.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the availability, stability and performance of the High Performance Computing (HPC) and Azure Batch platforms are suitable for the business requirements.
  • Support the end-users from the Front Office Systems division.
  • Oversee and implement the upgrade from HPC 2012 to HPC 2019.
  • Liaise with the Windows platform for the upgrade of the Windows servers from Windows 2008 / 2012 to Windows 2016.
  • Implement automated monitoring and housekeeping of the platform.
  • Review and optimise the existing PowerShell scripts as well as extend the automation functionality further.
  • Stay informed of the latest developments within Grid Computing and provides recommendations on how best to use the platform given the latest advances.
  • Review the existing on-premise and cloud-based platform and make recommendations for cost-savings, and increasing performance.
  • Perform daily housekeeping and maintenance checks to ensure the grid is constantly available and performant.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for Grid Computing
  • Mentor and train junior members of the team to support the platform.

 

Skills and Experience:

 

Work Experience:

Essential:

  • Grid Computing experience (including Microsoft HPC and Azure Batch)
  • Strong PowerShell skills


Preferred:

  • Experience automating manual processes
  • Experience with cloud services in Microsoft Azure
  • Experience with other Grid Computing solutions
  • Red Hat Linux experience

 
Functional / Technical Competencies:
Essential

  • Experience with supporting and developing a HPC grid in a corporate environment.

 

Preferred:

  • Previous experience supporting HPC
  • Strong development experience and ability to use automation to solve problems
  • Windows administration experience for troubleshooting and tuning the platform
