Description The State Manager Corporate Tax plays an integral role in ensuring the company is complying with its corporate tax filing and reporting requirements. As a key team member, this individual will assist in managing various corporate tax filings, as well as engage in critical tax research and planning activities to minimize risks and overall tax burdens. The ideal candidate will have a desire to continually learn and further develop their technical tax and accounting skillsets, and business acumen.
Principal Accountabilities
Compliance. Review and manage the state income tax compliance consisting of unitary, consolidated, combined, and separate corporate state income tax returns, including the necessary workpapers and schedules. Candidate will become knowledgeable in prior year workpapers and returns, review data for current year calculations, complete research and calculations as required. Ability to assist in federal tax compliance is a plus.
Tax Accounting . Review and manage the state income tax consequences for the quarterly SEC filings as part of the Company's ASC 740 processes. Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual tax provision for CME Group and Affiliates, including review and maintenance of well-documented, supporting work papers, as needed. Review reconciliations and journal entry adjustments as needed.
Audit Defense . Manage controversy matters with governmental agencies including responding to income tax notices from state & local jurisdictions, with focus on eliminating/minimizing tax liabilities while replying in a timely manner. Assist in tax audits by researching, gathering, and preparing documentation. Will also assist in controversy matters related to requests from the Internal Revenue Service and other tax jurisdictions.
Other tax areas . Identify opportunities for process improvements and the integration of technology into tax reporting functions. Support indirect tax filings and audits, including sales & use tax, Chicago lease tax, and other non-income tax compliance returns.
Software Skills and Requirements: • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Accounting. • 4 -8 years of corporate tax and/or public accounting experience. • Strong analytical skills, including attention to detail with an ability to identify relevant data points. • Tax research experience. Must be able to show a progression in mastering complex tax topics. • Ability to effectively communicate tax technical terms to a nontax audience. • Excellent communication and presentation skills with a comfort level communicating with all levels of management, boards of directors, external auditors and government officials. • Solid project and people management skills.
Preferred Qualifications: • CPA certification, with MST (or progress towards). • Tax specialty in a Big 4 environment or equivalent corporate experience. • Experience with income tax provision and FIN 48. • Proficiency with OneSource Tax Software beneficial
