Goldman Sachs is warning students against using ChatGPT in their interviews

If you’re preparing to do a HireVue as part of the recruitment process for an investment bank, you’ll know that it helps to prepare for the sorts of behavioural questions that banks love to ask. You cannot, however, prepare by practising your prompts on ChatGPT.

A recent email, sent out by Goldman Sachs’ campus recruitment team for the firm’s private investing academy in EMEA, felt the need to remind students of Goldman's “HireVue best practices”. These include reading the bank's financial results and familiarizing yourself with its business principles and core values.

A HireVue interview is not ideal for ChatGPT use. You don’t have very long to answer the questions – our research showed that, at Goldman Sachs specifically, you have 30 seconds of prep and 120 seconds to provide an answer. That’s not enough to type anything cohesive into ChatGPT and get a usable solution. Any solution that ChatGPT regurgitates will also not be specific to your own experiences.

Instead of relying on either ChatGPT or Google, you really need to prepare "traditionally". A self-proclaimed HireVue master told us to focus more on delivery than content - answering like an already-employed banker would, rather than a student. The S.T.A.R. technique is a good answer format to use too. Practice that ahead of time.

If Goldman is worried about the power of AI in the hands of its interns, then that’s a bad sign. This time last year, the firm was contemplating cutting its analyst class by up to two-thirds as Generative AI began to show promise in doing menial tasks usually reserved for juniors, such as building pitchbooks.
